Tanpınar novel 'Huzur' published in English
Today's Zaman, 16.01.2009
The English translation of “Huzur,” the 1949 novel of the great 20th century Turkish author Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (1901-1962), has been published in the United States, the US-based Turkish Cultural Foundation announced this week. Titled "A Mind at Peace" and translated into English by Erdağ M. Göknar, the novel was published by New York-based Archipelago Books, the foundation said in a written statement. The foundation also assisted the publishing of the book financially. Göknar, an assistant professor at Duke University, previously translated Nobel laureate Turkish author Orhan Pamuk's "Benim Adım Kırmızı" (My Name Is Red) into English. Set in pre-World War II Turkey, “A Mind at Peace” explores the quandaries of old versus new and east versus west during the process of modernization Turkey underwent in the early republican period through the portrayal of a Turkish family.
